J.Cole

"I'm trynna get beside ya like the number 9, dime." I've had this song stuck in my head and on blissful repeat for about a week. By a week, I mean two. It seems I'm a sucker for swift piano notes [especially ones that remind me of the opening notes of Biggie's "One More Chance" ...listen closely]; and husky slightly southern yet new york tinged accents huffing the words "So! fine". If a man told me I was summertime fine, I'd propose marriage... because well... I do love summer.

I love "In the morning" but why did Drake come with such a weak verse though? Are you telling me the man who came up with: Drizzy back up in this thing, I’m ready, whats happeninnnnnn couldn't spit something better than some mess about stallions?

I was fixing to do an all out Friday Night Lights review, until my friend so kindly pointed out that I'm extra late to the party. Obviously I'm going to review it anyway. Duh

I'm not sure exactly when, but I had written off rap a while ago... I was growing tired of the weak beats, snappy dances and cat in the hat lyrics. I didn't like what a lot of rap songs promoted or even talked about, but I came across the track above, loved it and decided to hear the rest. After I got through the 20 or so songs on the mixtape, I high-fived myself. It has been said before, but I will say it again: J.Cole is the truth... "Fine young man with an old man mind."

The 25 year old hails from Fayetteville, North Carolina and attended St. John's University in New York City on an academic scholarship. He chronicles the tales of his life over smooth, acutely tuned beats - rapping about everything from growing up in a harsh environment and his love/hate relationship with weed, to his many unforgettable and regrettable sexual experiences - while never betraying his persistent dreams of stardom.

It's hard to choose, but here are my favorite songs in totality: Too deep for the intro, Enchanted, Blow Up, In the Morning, The Autograph, Cost me a lot, Premeditated Murder, and See me world [which made me cry and sign up for volunteer work at a children's organization]. And uh, I think I just named the whole album. Anyways.

There are so many lyrics that blew me away, especially ones where he candidly talks about experiences that you assume one only faces after achieving immense fame, ie: "Cost me a lot". Here are my favorites:

Villematic:
One minute I'm overrated
Next minute I'm the savior
You hate it before you played it
I already forgave ya

Before I'm gone:
Pussy niggas running they mouth but we ain't flinching
They names ain't even mentioned
I got dreams bigger than your whole team
You niggas so broke but yet somehow you so green
I guess it's envy, started with a penny now I'm getting plenty money...
See me; I lived it all from dirt poor in a trailer
Worried about my mother and never trustin' my neighbors
To middle-class with a backyard and my own room
To bein' the only black kid in my homeroom
Academically gifted and followed my own rules
Was runnin' the streets hey ma I'll be home soon
Was out chasin' ho's, was out hoopin'
Them niggas wasn't ballin' but yet they was foul shootin'
So meet the newest role model who don't know how to fake this shit
Never sold a rock and look I made it bitch!

The Autograph:
They say anythings possible
You gotta dream like you never seen obstacles...
You know I feel ya pain, that's why I slang this hope shit
And give you lines that you rewind and think oh shit
These rappers talk a lot of money, cars and hoes shit
I give you that and a whole lot more shit

Enchanted:
It seems like niggas either feel ya or they try and kill ya...
But will it change, it's like niggas is free but our minds still in the chains
Brothers killing each other, the blood spill it's a shame
Will it ever slow up
A lot of niggas getting older but they never grow up...
I'm not as fast, I'm not as tall
But before I pass
I gotta ball
I gotta ball
I gotta ball
Nigga I gotta ball

And my favorite:

Looking for trouble:
Hey, Cole World, make way for the chosen one
what you now hear is putting fear in all the older ones
downplayed me to downgrade me like they don’t notice son
your shoes too big too fill? I can barely squeeze my toes in ‘em
fucking hoes while teaching niggas to hold your sons
this the rap Moses, scratch that, Mary and Joseph’s son
high as fuck with a cold flow and a loaded gun
never say I’m better than Hov, but I’m the closest one
heard you looking for trouble, what, I’m supposed to run?
yo’ bitch invited me inside her, ain’t I supposed to cum?
got niggas that’ll blow your tee off, put a hole in one
now you outside of heaven’s gate, fronting like you know someone
talking hard, but y’all still ain’t push me
they say you are what you eat, and I still ain’t pussy
fuck it, everybody can get it
when you’re this hot, everybody’s a critic
but when you’re this high everybody’s a midget
all this mean mugging from niggas that mean nothing
could it be my position is one that you dreamed of?
went from quarter to broke to half past rich
with my badass bitch
and you don’t want no problems on some math class shit
so check the young genius out
fuck the World, bust a nut, and let my semen sprout
I thought that real shit is what you been fiendin bout
what you been praying for? What you been screaming ’bout?
ironic you been sleeping on the one that you been dreaming ’bout

He gets an extra 5 points for this gem I caught: "Girl you're special like I met you in a slow class." Amazing. [And p.s. - Til Infinity, over one of my favorite hip-hop beats of all time gained him another 5 points.]

  2. As a fan of J.Cole, I must say that I'm curious to see what the album will contain. Drake did a great job of not placing saturated songs on Thank Me Later, hopefully Cole will do the same, if not better.
